HOW TO
TAKE CARE
OF YOUR TATTOO
+
LIKE YOU’VE NEVER HEARD ANY OF THIS BEFORE
STEP BY STEP
BECAUSE I KNOW YOU FORGET EVERYTHING THE SECOND YOU WALKED OUT ❤️
PHASE 1
WASH AND CLEAN YOUR TATTOO EVERY 3 HOURS, ALWAYS REAPPLYING THE WRAP
Once you leave the studio, your tattoo needs to be washed every 3 hours. First things first: wash your hands carefully. Your tattoo is an open wound, so always be mindful of infections.Remove the plastic wrap, wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and neutral soap, then gently but firmly clean it using paper towels (or a clean towel).Yes, it might hurt — but it’s necessary. Keep cleaning until the paper stays clean when you pass it over the tattoo. At that point, let the tattoo breathe for about 10 minutes so it can dry slightly, then reapply the plastic wrap. ⚠️ Do NOT apply cream during this phase.
PHASE 2
REMOVE THE WRAP AND START USING THE CREAM
When you wake up, remove the wrap and wash the tattoo exactly like you did the day before.
If the tattoo has leaked a lot of plasma (→ very dirty wrap, and it takes many passes before the paper stays clean), reapply the wrap and wash it again after 3 hours. If it leaked only a little, let it air-dry for about 30 minutes, until the tattoo feels dry. You’ll notice it because the skin starts to feel tight and looks slightly translucent. At this point, apply a thin, even layer of cream. The entire tattooed area must be moisturized, but no visible white patches of cream should remain.
PHASE 3
APPLY CREAM EVERY TIME THE TATTOO FEELS DRY
The plastic wrap can go back to the kitchen — you won’t need it anymore. The cream, on the other hand, should become an extension of your body. Every time the tattoo feels even slightly dry, apply cream. (No need to remind you to wash your hands before applying it, right?!) Wear cotton clothing or non-synthetic, non-irritating fabrics. Wash the tattoo daily with neutral soap. Phase 3 lasts until full healing. Timing depends on your skin and the season, but generally it takes 15 to 30 days. In the first few days, the tattoo will dry out less often. As the skin regenerates, it will need cream more frequently. Don’t worry — this is completely normal.
PHASE 4
THE TATTOO IS HEALED
Your tattoo is healed when it no longer itches, there are no scabs or flakes, and it feels like a natural part of your skin ✨
Treat it well: always use sunscreen when exposing it to the sun (even in the city, not just at the beach), and moisturize it often with body cream. If you do this, any future touch-up will be needed in a very, very long time ♥️
OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW
Yes, absolutely.
Especially with large or colorful tattoos, small scabs during healing are normal. You can minimize them by cleaning the tattoo thoroughly in the first few days. If scabs do appear, moisturize them well and do not pick them off — you risk pulling color out with them. (If something happens — like a scab coming off while getting dressed — don’t panic. It can be touched up and everything will be fine.)
IS IT NORMAL TO GET SCRAB WHILE HEALING?
CAN I USE REGULAR BODY LOTION IF DON’T HAVE THE CREAM YOU RECCOMANDED?
No. Not all creams are suitable for healing tattoos. Especially scented ones — they can irritate or infect the wound.
That said, many options work perfectly fine: creams based on panthenol, or natural products like shea butter or calendula. Just make sure they contain no added fragrances or alcohol.
Absolutely yes — BUT DON’T SCRATCH! Apply cream when it itches.
If that’s not enough, a good workaround is scratching the area around the tattoo instead 👹
IS ITCHING NORMAL?
DOES THIS METHOD WORK FOR TATTOOS DONE BY ANY TATTOO ARTIST?
While this is a fairly universal aftercare method, every tattoo artist has their own way of working and specific guidelines for healing. Always follow the instructions given by the professional you trusted with your tattoo.
